Open Educational Resources (OER)

Mission is to expand access to education by promoting awareness and adoption of Open Educational Resources (OER). Over 100 colleges are members of our consortium and many more participate in our activities and use the resources posted here.

The International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) is the leading global membership organization for open, distance, flexible and online education, including e-learning, and draws its membership from institutions, educational authorities, commercial actors, and individuals.

It includes a link to the publication “Open Educational Resources Overview” which includes lists of OpenCourseWare, Courses and Learning Objects, Open Collections, Repositories and Portals, Open Journals and Books, and Consortia and Virtual Communities.

An independent, not-for-profit organization that provides leadership, networking and support for educators and educational institutions to achieve their objectives through Open Education.

SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) works to enable the open sharing of research outputs and educational materials in order to democratize access to knowledge, accelerate discovery, and increase the return on our investment in research and education. As a catalyst for action, SPARC focuses on collaborating with other stakeholders—including authors, publishers, libraries, students, funders, policymakers and the public—to build on the opportunities created by the Internet, promoting changes to both infrastructure and culture needed to make open the default for research and education.

This course is meant as a primer to anyone interested in learning more about the OER movement. It provides learning opportunities related to the origins of open resources, copyright and open licensing. It also acts as an overview of searching best practices both on the web and in OER repositories. The last section invites the course participant to incorporate and/or remix an open resource for their own learning or teaching
