Use of Library Materials by Students and Community Patrons (full version)

Brief version of Use of Library Materials

Students, faculty, staff, as well as the general public, are encouraged to use the library. Library materials borrowed from TCC may be returned to any campus library.

Students must have a valid TCC identification card in order to check out library materials for home use or to access materials in restricted library locations. A processing fee of $10.00 is charged for replacement of photo i.d. cards.

Community patrons must show a photo i.d. and proof of a current local address to obtain TCC library cards at the Circulation Desk.  A processing fee of $5.00 is charged for replacement of community patron library cards. At the TCC/City of Virginia Beach Joint-Use Library, patrons may apply for a VBPL card.”

Registered TCC students, faculty, and staff may also obtain a Virginia Tidewater Consortium Card which may be used to check out materials from other area academic libraries. Proof of registration is required. In all circulation transactions, a picture ID is required.

Check-out of Library Material

Students and consortium members may have up to 30 items checked out at one time. Community patrons may check out up to 15 items at one time.

 Loan Periods

The normal loan period for library print materials is four weeks. The normal loan period for audiovisual materials is one week. Materials that have been placed on course reserve, however, may have a shorter loan period.

Renewing Materials

Patrons may renew one time borrowed materials that have not been placed on hold by another patron. Items may be renewed once in person, by telephone, or through "My Account" in the library catalog. Patrons may place a hold on materials that are currently checked out and will be notified when the material is available. Students, faculty and staff can follow these instructions to access their library account.

Returning Library Materials

Return any library materials to any campus. Please return audio-visual (media) materials inside the library to prevent damage in the outside book drops.

Overdue/Lost materials

Patrons are personally responsible for the safety, proper use, and timely return of the library materials that they have checked out. If materials are not returned by the due date, all library privileges shall be suspended until all overdue materials are returned or all amounts owed to the college for replacement of the materials are paid in full. (overdue billing procedures)

Other Circulation Services

 Intercampus Loan

The process whereby one TCC library lends materials to another TCC library.  A TCC library card is required to request an intercampus loan.  Request forms are available in each campus LRC or online.  Materials are usually received by the requesting library within 3 days and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

Interlibrary Loan

The process whereby one library, academic or public, lends materials to another library. Interlibrary loan is available for TCC faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students.

Course Reserves

Locate materials in the Course Reserve Catalog. Materials are shelved in the "Course Reserves" section of the library when faculty place personal copies, textbooks, library books, audio/visual materials, and/or photocopies on Course Reserve for 2-hour in-library use, 24-hour use, 3-day use, or 1-week use. A request form is required for each item placed on reserve. Please abide by our Course Reserves policy and allow 48 hours (excluding weekends) for processing. Copyright compliance is the responsibility of the faculty member.
