Tips and tools for designing buttons

Design Resources

Button design should be performed in Canva.  Please visit the templates tab to access the button templates. You will need to sign in to your Canva account to access the files. They are shared as a "template" file and not a collaborative file, so you are free to edit the file. (Edits will remain on your account and will not affect the original template)

Notes on designing buttons in Canva:

When downloading your file for printing, Canva will default to "png" as the file format. You MUST save the file as "PDF Print" or the buttons will not be the correct size.  Canva does not allow printing without downloading the file.

Template Upload (12 buttons per page, slower design experience):

  • Circles CANNOT be moved or rearranged when using this template.

  • Canva MAY perform slow - their "file upload" feature is relatively new and not as optimized as designing directly in Canva.

Canva Template (9 buttons per page, better design experience)

  • Parts of the image will roll over the sides - DONT put text right against the edge of the image. Leave a space close to half of the height of the text

Be mindful of copyright and use Public Domain, Creative Commons (CC0) or original images.

Sources for Finding Images:

  • Canva has multiple built in photo sources that contain Public Domain and Creative Commons images. The main "photos" tab in the designer includes Canva owned images. Pexels and Pixabay apps are also available from the "Apps" tab in the designer. I have personally used both of these.
  • Google Image Search: Select "tools" > Usage Rights > Creative Commons License
  • Wikipedia: Public domain image resources (This wiki is technically outdated, but I prefer the organization of this version to the newer one)
    • Try to use government, library, and museum sources if possible. These will be more reliable, academia focused, and safer to download images from.

Also, with our original purchase, we have access to digital downloads.

1.  Copy and paste the url into your browser:  https://www.americanbuttonmachines.com/pages/digital-downloads.
2.  Under Button Maker Kits, click on Button Essentials, Artistic Creations 1 & 2
3.  Select Button Maker Kits
4.  The password is bea4247.
5.  They are zip files that will need to be downloaded.

In an effort to tag the TCC Libraries on each of our buttons, Terri Ruffin at Chesapeake, made labels to affix to the back of the buttons.  The labels say:  TCC Libraries, www.tcc.edu/library.  There are two examples provided.  One is with Avery 5160 mailing labels and one is with Demco call number labels 1 1/2" x 7/8" w, 545770.  Terri said that the Demco labels were the easiest to use because there wasn't as much trimming necessary, but you got more labels per sheet with the Avery 5160.
