Tutoring @ TCC

Student Expectations for Tutoring

General Expectations

  • Know the time allowance. You will be permitted up to two 30-minute tutoring sessions per subject, per day.
  • Be proactive. Read the instructions and attempt the assignment before seeking assistance.
  • Understand our limitations. Tutors will not assist you with a quiz, test, or exam.  Furthermore, writing tutors do not edit or proofread papers. However, a writing tutor will answer questions regarding the writing assignment, review a draft you've composed, or discuss an instructor’s feedback.

Scheduling a Tutoring Session

  • Don’t wait until the last minute! Scheduling a tutoring session immediately before an assignment is due creates undue stress for you and the tutor. Please plan your assignments and tutoring sessions accordingly.
  • Be respectful of others’ time. If you are unable to attend a scheduled tutoring session, please cancel your tutoring session as soon as possible. You can cancel the tutoring session by using the link to cancel in the original email or contacting the campus tutoring lab to request a cancellation.
  • Arrive on time. If you are 15 minutes late to a tutoring session, it will be considered a NO SHOW appointment, and you will need to reschedule the tutoring sessionFurthermore, accumulating more than three NO SHOW appointments in a semester will revoke your access to tutoring services for the remainder of the semester.

During a Tutoring Session

  • Limit distractions. Please silence your cell phone before entering one of the tutoring labs. If you need to take a phone call, please exit the tutoring lab to avoid disrupting others in the space.
  • Be prepared. We want you to have an effective tutoring session, so coming prepared will allow you to get the most out of your tutoring experience. For instance, arriving at the tutoring lab with all of your supplies, including the textbook, notes, assignment guidelines, essay draft, computer, etc. ready to discuss your questions will usually lead to a more productive conversation with a tutor.
  • Engage! A tutoring session requires an active conversation about your assignment/question, so plan to participate throughout the entire tutoring session.

After a Tutoring Session

  • Ask for more help! Schedule a follow-up tutoring session if you need additional assistance.
  • A clean space is a happy space. Take all of your belongings with you and clean up your area before exiting the lab.
  • Keep noise to a minimum. Leave the room without distracting others.
